7 tips to prepare the window installation area

You have just picked out your new windows from Dayside Windows and Doors and you have called to schedule your installation appointment. Things are coming together nice and quick. But did you know that there are actually a few things that you can do as the client to best prepare the installation area? Here are seven tips that can help you prepare your Brantford home for the installation of replacement windows.

1. Clean the area outside the window
Anything that is immediately outside of the window including removable planters, pots, lawn furniture, etc. should be moved until the replacement is complete. Cut back any trees or shrubs that may create obstacles for your installer as well.

2. Clean the area inside the window
Any furniture inside of your home that’s close to the window should be moved aside so that the installation crew has enough space to work. Keeping the work area free from obstacles will reduce the likelihood of a crew member having an accident or inadvertently causing damage to any of your belongings.

3. Remove window coverings
Blinds, curtains, drapes and any other window treatments should be removed to give workers easy access to the wall surrounding the windows that are being replaced. You should also remove any paintings and other wall hangings within the working vicinity.

4. Protect your floors
Plastic sheeting, a tarp or a canvas drop cloth can be used to protect the floor near the windows that are being replaced. Taking time to protect your floor can help keep dust out of the carpets and prevent hardwood from getting accidentally scuffed or scratched.

5. Protect your belongings
Like most renovation projects, replacing the windows can generate a lot of dust, which can then settle on items close to the work area. Try to remove any items from the room that are sensitive to dust and cover anything that cannot be removed with a plastic sheet.

6. Protect your home
To keep the dust and debris or to keep the heat or cool air inside, use drop cloths or floor-to-ceiling plastic sheeting while the installers work. As for children and pets, it’s best to keep them away from the work area since installers will be carrying heavy materials in and out of your home.

7. Make your home accessible
If you won’t be present during the time of your appointment, make arrangements with the installers to ensure that they won’t be locked out of the house. Turn off any security or alarm systems as well. Especially the ones with window sensors.
