How Long Does It Take to Replace a Window?

If you have never had to replace windows before, it can be a little worrisome knowing that your home is going to be exposed to the outdoors for an indefinite period of time. Knowing what to expect when you replace your windows and what you can do to expedite the process can relieve much of this anxiety.

When you have new windows installed, exact measurements are critical. Your window installer will visit your home to take precise measurements before your windows are put into production. Windows with all-white frames can be produced quickly; however, custom colours may take longer.

Window Installation
Once your windows have been produced, and your installers are at your home, window installation is usually a fairly quick process – an average of 45 minutes to an hour per window.

There are, however, a number of factors that affect the actual amount of time, including:

• - Size and shape of windows;
• - Number of windows being replaced;
• - Whether the windows being replaced are at ground level or an upper level;
• - The material of the walls (wood, stucco, brick, etc.); and
• - Whether or not there is anything obstructing the installers’ path to the window openings.​

What can you do to make your window installation go more quickly?
Being organized and taking a few simple steps before your window installers arrive on your property can do a lot to expedite the process.

For starters, you should take down any window treatments such as curtains or blinds.

Additionally, you will want to make sure that your installers will have clear paths to your window openings both on the interior and exterior of your home. This may include moving any furniture or large objects that may be blocking the window as well as removing pictures, mirrors, etc. from the wall near the window opening. It is recommended that a minimum of 3’ around the window is left clear for the installers to work.

Finally, you should leave your doors unlocked during the time period that your windows are being replaced. Since window installation requires access to both the inside and outside of your home, you can help the process go more smoothly if your installers don’t have to knock or ring the doorbell every time they need to enter your home. If you are not going to be home at any stage during your window installation, it is important to make arrangements with your installers ahead of time.
