With snow’s early arrival in Southern Ontario this year, many of us were left scrambling to get our homes winterized. Some tasks – such as removing your home’s window screens – may have been skipped due to lack of time. Here’s why it’s important that you remove your window screens for the winter. Create More Light and Warmth Once your window screens are removed, more natural light can come into your home. Although most noticeable in your south and east-facing windows, any window without a screen will let in more light. Besides increasing the amount of light let into your home, windows without screens can make your home warmer, as well. During the sunniest winter days, the area around windows without screens is typically up to eight degrees warmer. Windows without screens let in 30-40 percent more heat from the sun, which can save you on heating costs, too. More Aesthetically Appealing Many homeowners enjoy looking out their windows without having a screen obstruct their view. Since dirt and debris cannot be trapped between the pane and screen, the windows are clearer to look out of, too. Reduces Snow Buildup Window screens can cause ice or snow to get stuck between your screen and window in blowing snowstorms. Besides causing potential bowing or warping on the screen, snow and ice buildup can also lead to sill or frame damage. Removing your window screens can help eliminate the need for costly repairs or window replacements. Winter Screen Maintenance Removing your window screens each year presents a great opportunity to inspect them for wear and tear damage. The better you maintain your window screens and frames, the longer they will be able to keep your home protected. Before you store your screens, take the time to clean them thoroughly. Begin by labelling each screen as you remove it from its window so that you have an easier time replacing them next spring. Next, gently vacuum both sides of the screen to remove any spider webs, dust, pollen and dirt. Use soapy water and a sponge to go over the surface of the screen and both sides of its frame. Follow with a thorough rinse of water. If using a hose, use a low-pressure setting to avoid screen damage. Ensure they are dried completely before storing them in a safe place – preferably one where there is little foot traffic before spring.
